Mama’s Club is a Ugandan community-based organization led by women living with HIV focused on addressing the impact of HIV, reducing the associated stigma, and providing support to and empowering HIV-positive mothers. Mama’s Club provides psychosocial peer-to-peer support and provides training in HIV prevention and income-generating skills. The club is led by 50 mothers, 25 of whom are between the ages of seventeen and twenty-two, who travel to nearby local communities to mentor other mothers. Its broader policy and programmatic activities include advocacy to men about becoming more active partners in the prevention of vertical transmission, and instigating change in child custody practices, so that women living with HIV can remain the custodial parents of their children.
