World AIDS Day 2012 - Red Ribbon Awards Officially Presented in National Ceremonies and Events around the world

Official handovers of the 2012 Red Ribbon Award prize of US$ 10 000 to each of the Red Ribbon Award Winners 2012 took place to recognize their outstanding work in the response to HIV at the community level. At official events marking these handovers, Red Ribbon Award Winners are being recognized by national and regional leaders in special ceremonies around World AIDS Day.Through their activities and engagement, the Red Ribbon Award Winners are making a vital difference in the lives of people affected by HIV. Such ceremonies not only honor the Winners themselves, but also bring special attention to the importance of the community-based response to AIDS.

Join us all in applauding the accomplishments of the Red Ribbon Award Winners 2012!

The Red Ribbon Award Special Session and the Community Dialogue Space sessions highlight the critical impact of community initiatives that show leadership in reducing the spread and impact of AIDS, one community at a time.

In appreciation of the vital work done at the grass-roots level by community based organizations, there was a Special Session of the XIX International AIDS Conference devoted to the Red Ribbon Award Winners for 2012. Participants in AIDS2012 came to the award ceremony held at 1:00 p.m. on 25 July 2012 to celebrate the RRA Winners for 2012 and their important work in their communities.

Speakers at this one-hour Special Session were:

  • HRH Mette-Marit, Crown Princess of Norway
  • Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS
  • Nobel Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi (via video message)
  • Jim McDermott, Member of the US House of Representatives
  • Marisol Touraine, Minister of Health and Social Affairs of France

In addition, the ten RRA Winners spoke about their work and commitment to the response to AIDS at the community level.

The names of the Red Ribbon Award Winners for 2012 were announced to the audience of the First Plenary Session of the International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC, USA. The announcement was carried via live Web-feed worldwide.

These Winners were chosen from over 1400 nominees from around the world via a selection process led by civil society. Congratulations to the Winners!! You are an inspiration to the community-based response to AIDS around the world!!

The 2012 Red Ribbon Award Winners were honored and celebrated at a Special Session at the International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC, USA. This was the very first time that RRA Winners have been given a Special Session at the IAC. The biennial global award is given to 10 organizations that have shown outstanding community leadership and action against AIDS.
